What is Silver Cord?

Silver Cord is a program that recognizes students for community service completed during their high school career. Students who complete at least 200 hours of community service during 9-12th grade are recognized and honored with a silver cord at graduation. Students must have earned at least 100 hours by the end of their sophomore year and have the full 200 before the last week of April during their senior year.

Logging Hours

Service hours completed over the summer will be accepted and will count towards the following school year, (ex: hours completed during the summer between freshman and sophomore year will count towards sophomore year) this means you can start during the summer after 8th grade!

Silver Cord Service forms are available in the High School Office, or you can print one from the link below.

What counts for Silver Cord hours?
  • It is the intent of the Silver Cord program that hours be in direct service to others in need through local community service agencies and other outreach programs.
  • Silver Cord hours must meet a clearly defined need for an agency, charity program, church, political agency, social service group or community event.
  • In order for hours to be honored, the student may not receive payment or credit for their services.
  • Services may only count for silver cord if you are not counting them for another school activity's required service hours.
    • For example, if you helped run a concession stand, you could count those hours for Silver Cord OR NHS, but not both.
    • Or, working in the concession stand for FFA, would not count.
  • Service NOT recognized: music or athletic practices or manager duties, performing duties/chores for one’s family, participation in clinics or service which is part of an academic or court ordered or disciplinary requirement.
